The Best Western franchise provides an ideal combination of local ownership and national marketing support. The chain began in 1946 simply as a referral system. The idea gradually formed into a combined reservation system and quality standards.

For many years, the organization used the name Best Western for the hotels West of the Mississippi and Best Eastern for those East of the Mississippi. The entire system adopted the name Best Western in 1966. I assume this is because folk out East are jealous of the folk who get to live out West.
